TikTok Rolls Out Comment Downvotes to All Users

TikTok has announced that it’s rolling out comment downvotes for all users, as a means to flag inappropriate responses to video clips.

The TikTok’s ‘Thumbs Down’ comment downvote option will be displayed at the far right of each comment, providing a quick and easy way for users to tag such, in order to help TikTok identify negative behaviors in the app.

 

TikTok’s approach is actually to use the indicator as a means to weed out negative behaviors.

“We’ve started testing a way to let individuals identify comments they believe to be irrelevant or inappropriate.
This community feedback will add to the range of factors we already use to help keep the comment section consistently relevant and a place for genuine engagement.
To avoid creating ill-feeling between community members or demoralize creators, only the person who registered a dislike on a comment will be able to see that they have done so.”

The dislike count will not be public, but will help help TikTok’s moderation team get on top of negative trends, as flagged by its users.

That could also help to limit targeted attacks on people or opinions based on alternative motivations.

 

The problem with algorithmic trends is that divisive, negative content is amplified via this process, because sparking an emotional response, like anger, drives more people to comment and share. The algorithm then takes as an indicator that more people might want to see it, based on engagement response. The system itself has no way of determining the intent of the content, it only goes on binary signals – which means that triggering more reactions, however you can, is the best way to maximize exposure.

For example:

The general problem with algorithms is they look at the duration of how long you are watching the clip, or how many times you watch the clip as a means of confirming if it is trending content. So even if you do not agree with the content, and may even be shocked to see people being nasty with each other on a platform – the fact that you looked at the whole video or even twice at the video- will amplify the content.

We are so glad that they brought in this feature, but with everything …. there will always be others who will use it to negatively impact other people, like for example competitors marking their competition’s content as inappropriate.

Disappearing content is a key feature on platforms like WhatsApp and Snapchat, and now Instagram is getting on board, testing a new feature called Notes. Notes allow users to post quick ramblings or announcements to their ‘close friends’ circle or to followers who also follow them. It works like a sticky note, with the content disappearing after 24 hours. Currently in testing, it’s thought that Notes will be able to be up to 60 characters in length. E-commerce is continuing to step up a level on Twitter, with the platform now partnering with Shopify to launch a sales channel app. The app allows Shopify merchants in the US to onboard themselves to Twitter’s Shopping Manager. Shopping Manager is the dashboard where sellers can access product catalogue tools, as well as enable other shopping features for their profiles. After linking their Shopify and Twitter accounts, merchants can use the new app to sync their product catalogues to Twitter.

Snapchat Officially Launches its New ‘Snapchat+’ Subscription Program

As explained by Snap:

Today we’re launching Snapchat+, a collection of exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features available in Snapchat for $3.99/month.  This subscription will allow us to deliver new Snapchat features to some of the most passionate members of our community and allow us to provide prioritized support.”

Could TikTok be in for another legal challenge in order to remain in operation in the US?

It seems that the heat could be rising for the app once again, with FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr publishing an open letter that calls upon both Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores due to TikTok’s ‘pattern of surreptitious data practices’, which specifically relates to how it shares data with its Chinese parent company.

As per Carr:

“TikTok is not what it appears to be on the surface. It’s not just an app for sharing funny videos or memes. That’s the sheep’s clothing. At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data.”

Care notes that TikTok tracks a range of data inputs, including search and browsing histories, keystroke patterns, biometric identifiers, draft messages and other metadata, while it can also access text, images, and videos that are stored on a device’s clipboard.

Back in 2020, with the introduction of iOS 14, TikTok users noted that the app was tracking their Clipboard content, with the new iOS notifiers showing that TikTok was accessing the Clipboard every few seconds. Amid various questions around why it would need to do so, TikTok then said that it would remove from this element from the app – but still, the fact that TikTok was disingenuously sucking in more user data underlined concerns that it is indeed being used to glean maximum insight on its users. And with parent company ByteDance beholden to the CCP, under China’s controversial cybersecurity policies, the concern remains that TikTok could inadvertently be used as a surveillance tool in every market that it operates.

How Many Instagram Hashtags Should You Use On Your Posts?

 Instagram recently advised that creators should use between 3-5 hashtags on their posts, despite allowing up to 30 per post.

This goes against everything we’ve previously heard about how hashtags work on Instagram, but based on their new focus on keywords and SEO, it does (kind of) make sense.

Instagram is introducing more “suggested” content feeds – like the Instagram Reels tab, for example. But in order to provide suggested content that truly is a “good match,” Instagram needs to be able to accurately categorize it. The theory? Fewer hashtags = more reliable self categorization.

However, we would like to mention that current testing still confirms that more hashtags equals to better results.

Unlike Twitter, Instagram doesn’t publicize a list of trending hashtags. However, if you search for a hashtag on Instagram, you’ll see how many posts use that hashtag. You’ll also see a list of other popular Instagram hashtags using similar words, with post counts included too.
