Colour Psychology and how it is a powerful marketing tool.

Colour Psychology and how it can be a powerful marketing tool.

Being able to incorporate colour whilst creating visuals and imagery, opened up a whole new world of possibilities for establishing and growing businesses and their brands, giving them their unique look and feel and driving the focus on the psychology of colour as a marketing tool.

The history of colour

The 1660s brought a divine change to the world as Isaac Newton began a series of experiments with sunlight and prisms. He demonstrated that clear white light was composed of seven visible colours, the colours we see in a rainbow. His work led to breakthroughs in optics, physics, chemistry, perception, and the study of colour in nature.

1861 – The world’s first colour photograph was produced by Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell. The image was created by photographing the tartan ribbon three times through red, blue, and yellow filters, then recombining the images into one colour composite. Another exciting element of colour brought into our lives.

1977 – The Apple II was released, allowing for colour display on a CRT monitor.

Colour as a marketing tool

Colour is all around us and it can be such a powerful tool for marketing your existing or new business if used correctly. Did you know that a signature colour can boost brand recognition by 80%?

In branding your business, colour psychology is focussed on how colours can impact the consumers impression of a brand and whether or not they convince the consumers to consider a specific brand above another.

Colour plays a vital role in how your brand is perceived by consumers, clients or future leads as each colour evokes different emotions and desires.

People tend to think that choosing an easy colour or perhaps even just their favourite colour will do the trick, but you have to think outside the box! Choose a colour that is authentic to your brand. Choose a colour that differentiates your brand, a colour that will really appeal to your audience and that sells your product or services subtly yet powerfully. Deciding on a colour that is not suitable for your brand and the products or services you offer, can affect the growth you are hoping for, for your business.

CocaCola, Mc Donalds, KFC, Facebook, Mercedes Benz, to name a few big brands, all carefully selected their brand colours, keeping in mind their target audience, the feeling or desire for the product they want to get across to the consumer and what will create enough impact to reach max sales potential.

When we create a new brand or logo for clients we always ask what is the feeling or emotion you would like your brand to represent?

Integrating your colour scheme across the board on your website, logos and products for example will create the highest impact on consumers to be familiar with your specific brand and it can assist in creating a visual for them that keeps them interested and coming back for more.

The colour red contains emotions like excitement and passion.

While the colour green portrays safety, stability, and reliability.

Want to build trust and loyalty with your customers then consider using colours like dark blue. Interestingly this is also the preferred colour for corporate America.

Let’s have a brief look at some colours and which emotions they are associated with:

With your base colour in mind, the second step is to find an accent colour.

For many brands 2 or 3 accent colours really help elevate the brand and make it more appealing.

Take note that black and white can form part of your brand colours or can be treated as neutral colours.

Define your brand and what it stands for and then let us create a powerful business by imprinting it on your potential customers with consistent colour communication.

Are you frustrated with the demands of social media on your business?

Are you frustrated with the demands of social media on your business?

Here are some of the things that frustrates our clients the most when running their own social media.

Frustration 1: I do not know where to start or what to do?

Are you confused about what is more important than another? Maybe we you know even know how to set up a Facebook Business account correctly. It’s Ok, you do not have to know and understand anything, to outsources to an expert social media agency. At Chilli Media we take care of all the hassles and stuff.

Frustration 2: I can not design images?

You can try designing your own on platforms like Canva, which is ideally designed for those without design skills and software. Or you can hire a graphic designer. Most importantly you need to make sure your content looks “On Brand” and does not damage the overall objective of the business. Poor quality or even low-resolution images does not portray the best image for your business – so how do you want people to react when they see your business for the very first time?

Frustration 3: I don’t know if social media is actually a benefit to my business?

By having clearly defined goals, and reviewing your statistics frequently will help you decide if social media is actually a plus for your business. If you do not know what to measure and track – how will you know what works?

Frustration 4: I have lots of followers but nobody is buying?

This is the number 1 trap most business fall into- thinking that a large number of followers will result in sales/ profit. But not every person out there are your ideal customer so you need to focus your efforts on attracting people that will not just like your content but also buy from you.

Frustration 5: Social media takes too much time.

This is so true, social media management is time consuming especially if you struggle to come up with content ideas. Luckily our social media management packages already come with content creation, you don’t have to pay extra for that!

Frustration 6: My boosted post is just not working?

Although boosted post is a great way to start dabbling in Facebook advertising is not 90% as powerful as creating ads in Ads Manager. And to really be effective you need to know what to do and what to test when running ads. We have been successfully managing Facebook Ads for businesses since 2014.

Frustration 7: Everyone I speak to always wants to redo my emails/websites and everything else?

At Chilli Media, we are transparent about what we do and what we price and will never suggest anything unnecessary just to inflate the invoice.

Frustration 8: Why does it cost so much?

Social media managers charge anything from R1000 and upwards. If someone is responsible for how your business looks- who would you trust: the person that has no experience or the person with as much experience as what you can afford?

Social media can easily go horribly wrong with a bad tweet or insensitive remark- don’t leave your brand reputation up to chance.

There is more to effective social media marketing  than just writing a few words and adding a pretty picture.

Are you using hashtags on the right platforms?

Hashtags may be considered a social media staple just like your most favourite thing but did you know they serve a different purpose on different platforms?

You might also discover that hashtags are not only meant to gain posts more likes even though that is one of its functions, they mean so much more!

Facebook

Yes, that is right, hashtags do work on Facebook. However there is only one thing to note, only public posts can populate under hashtag hubs.

Facebook Hashtag Best Practices

Popular hashtags can be effective. Sometimes, the most popular hashtag are the ones that make it easiest to reach fan. For example, you may feel tempted to differentiate a topic or promote the topic like: #NBAFinalsOnABC but fans may be using the simpler version of the hashtag, #NBAFinals

Keep it simple: Several different hashtags for a single topic can sometimes be confusing for fans. Keep it simple and use one or a few hashtags that fans can understand and remember

Avoid punctuation: Hashtags will not pick up any punctuation on any platform. For example #Let’sGoHeat should be written #LetsGoHeat so the entire hashtag is clickable

Avoid spaces: Hashtags will not pick up any spaces on any platform. For example #Lets Go Heat will not make the entire phrase clickable

Use hashtags to identify a topic of conversation: For example, “The Heat are playing great! #NBAFinals”

Incorporate hashtags into your sentences: For example, “Who gets your vote for #NBAFinals MVP?”

Connect other platforms to your Facebook Pages: Any hashtags that you use on other platforms that are connected to your Facebook Page will be automatically clickable and searchable on Facebook.

Twitter

Twitter hashtags are clickable, searchable and you can also use them in your biography to show up under search results. The search results will only show public accounts tweets such as Facebook and will first be ranked depending on their popularity.

Also, Twitter has a limited number of characters that one is not supposed to exceed, 280 characters per tweet hence consider using hashtags sparingly. Too many hashtags also on a tweet can make one look desperate and spammy hence choose them wisely.

Instagram

Just like in Facebook and Twitter, hashtags on Instagram are also clickable and searchable. They are used to group together similar content or tie together recurring events. Anytime one uses the hashtag feature, a surge of engagement on older posts normally happens which will consequently extend the life of the past grams.

Also, public accounts in Instagram get to appear under hashtag hubs thus if your account is private you cannot access this feature. Using too many hashtags in your post also makes you look desperate.

Additionally, on Instagram, you can do a lot of hashtags, even up to 30 in a post since the character limit is great, though use them wisely.

We suggest about 15- 30 relevant hashtags per post.

Read more here if you want more information about Instagram Hashtags

I bet you never thought that there could be so many factors to consider when it comes to using hashtags across the different social platforms. The truth is, each platform is unique! When used well, hashtags can be very powerful tools to gaining new followers to your posts, raise brand awareness, and connect current interactions and so much more!

Hashtag strategies for business

Creating hashtags #testyourhashtags

Hashtags are here to stay!

If you want to drive more traffic to your website and reach more customers, it’s important to make the most of this your marketing strategy and get with the times, as hashtags carry a lot of weight in social media marketing now.

#hashtagresearch

Do some research. There are many sites that will search across many social media sites and show you posts with the hashtag in. The aim for you is to create relevant hashtags that aren’t in use as well as using ones that are.

Take #testyourhashtags as an example. I used a site called Hashatit.com and searched for this hashtag, surprisingly there were no results. That’s not a bad thing though. Consider that if there are no current posts attached to the tag, this blog will be the only one and you will have the readers full attention. Take another example #createhashtags , this will be widely used as people will be researching on how to create hashtags and the originator of the articles will use that tag when talking about how to create them. Sort of like a supply and demand.

businessman drawing city scheme concept

Tips for #creatinghashtags

1. Keep them short. Period.

2. Use them in the content of your social media posts instead of at the bottom.

3. Keep your links close to your hashtags, this will help increase the engagement you receive.

4. Make sure they are interesting, #furniture is not as interesting as #shabbychicfurniture

5. They must be relevant. How many times do you see people randomly putting tags in a post just to get clicks? Sure they will come up in a search but if their post isn’t about the topic, they won’t get the engagement. I wouldn’t write a blog about dogs and then use #motorbikes #classiccars as chances are I will just make myself unpopular.

Once you have made your hashtags – do you test them?

Sitting on a social media post and randomly putting in tags that spring to mind is one thing but if you don’t know their impact or if anyone else is using them, how do you know if they are going to work for you? Or worse, you could use a hashtag thinking it means one thing but actually it means something completely different #awkward. You don’t want to be paying respects to someones funeral and then add a hashtag that is linked to mass amounts of party gear.

Take #walkitoff – it could mean things to do with dieting, exercise. sports, charity walks or even in regards to someone getting fired from a job. Just #walkitoff

It is really important to test your hashtags and while you are at it, make sure you look into software that can track the analytics of them so you know what gets the clicks and what drives the consumers to your website. If you find a hashtag relevant to your site that isn’t widely used, it is possible to start a trend and be the centre of it, that’s why testing and tracking are so important.

WordPress & WooCommerce

WordPress is a free open source content management system, and millions of websites worldwide.  Combined that with WooCommerce, a free plugin for WordPress that can transform any WordPress website into a full-fledged eCommerce store.

It’s flexible, and widely used as well.

Here are a few reasons why the use of WooCommerce is so widespread:

  • It’s entirely free to install on your WordPress website.
  • It’s Equipped With Nearly All the Features You Need
  • You could try and build it yourself if you are tech savvy.
  • It’s easy to maintain even if you don’t want to continue paying your developer.
  • You have control over the final design, via a full library of WooCommerce themes.
  • Your store is mobile-friendly right out of the box, so it will look and perform great no matter what devices your visitors are using to shop.
  • You can add a ton of different features via the plugin library, just like how you usually add features to a standard WordPress site.
  • It’s Flexible and scalable

Compared to the other 2 choices, this is far more affordable. You only need to pay a developer a fee to set-up and design the site for you, so that means no monthly fee and no extra % on each sale that you make.Need a trusted eCommerce website developer?
